WENSCHOW IS BACK
Karl Wenschow, who was born in 1884 in Benneckenstein
and died in 1947, was a German sculptor and cartographer.
As the son of a mason, Wenschow developed the procedure
for the industrial production of precise relief maps in 1918.
By using contour lines, it was possible to create precise
hard plaster relief in a relief- milling-machine. In the world of
cartography this procedure is known as the Wenschow-procedure.
Wenschow relief maps have become well-known worldwide
for their plastic geographical representation. The Wenschow
procedure brings a visual effect of relief into the face of a map.

Drawn and Printed by Karl Wenschow:

Karl Wenschow is the inventor of the relief technique. Due to
his technique Wenschow relief maps have gained worldwide
recognition. Wenschow was the most popular school
map in the USA. Distinguished for his excellent execution of
the relief, nature-like, harmonizing, earth-like colors and
high readability of the typical Wenschow related typefaces.
From the 1960s up until the 1980s Wenschow maps were
distributed by Denoyer-Geppert in Chicago, USA.
In 1984, however, Denoyer-Geppert was taken over by Rand
McNally. Despite the takeover, Wenschow
still printed and designed school maps for Rand McNally
for many years after. Even now you can still find
Wenschow maps in a lot of university and college libraries
throughout the USA.
